Lord Best is an independent crossbencher in the House of Lords and was created a life peer in 2001. He is a British housing sector leader and policy expert and has previously served as Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Chair of The Property Ombudsman and Chair of Hanover Housing Association.
In Parliament Lord Best has successfully piloted five Private Members Bills through the House of Lords (most recently the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018); he has also chaired two Select Committees.
Currently, Lord Best chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Housing and Care for Older People; and the Oxford University’s Commission on Creating Healthy Cities. Lord Best is also a member of the House of Lords Built Environment Select Committee.
Lord Best has been a Church Commissioner, Chair of the Affordable Housing Commission (of the Smith Institute/Nationwide Foundation), and is an Hon Fellow of the RIBA, Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, Fellow of the Academy of Urbanism.
